Never, I swore, would I run an ultra. Too far. Too dull. Too hard.
I had friends who did them. Crazy, wild-haired folk with no toenails to speak of. Crawling between physios, bound in K-Tape.
I also had friend who DNF’d in them. That’s a pain no K-Tape can fix.
Why would you do it? I didn’t get it.
About 25km into the Taniwha, I got it.

I blasted into the running scene by winning the Tarawera Ultramarathon in 2014. I was a nobody; no one knew me and I definitely wasn't being picked to win. My first ultra was only a month earlier where I took the win and finished feeling like I could keep running. I just knew ultras were for me.
In the space of fifty days, Mr Law ran 1,659km with a total elevation gain of 81,779 metres -spending 437 hours on his feet. Understandably, this took an enormous toll on his body -particularly his knees. 19 days in, with the real possibility looming of not being able to complete the Challenge, Mr Law switched to HOKA ONE ONE Challenger ATR trail running shoes.

The 2015 edition of the Tussock Traverse is set to take place this Saturday January 24th.
The event which caters to both keen trail runners and walkers, as well as people new to the excitement of off-road adventures, is raced on one of the most scenic and varied courses in New Zealand. Event options include a 26km run/walk; 13km run/walk or a 6km run/walk with all event options finishing at the iconic Chateau Tongariro for a well deserved rest and post-race BBQ.
