The 2015 edition of the Tussock Traverse is set to take place this Saturday January 24th.
The event which caters to both keen trail runners and walkers, as well as people new to the excitement of off-road adventures, is raced on one of the most scenic and varied courses in New Zealand. Event options include a 26km run/walk; 13km run/walk or a 6km run/walk with all event options finishing at the iconic Chateau Tongariro for a well deserved rest and post-race BBQ. This will also be the site of the event pre-registration and event prize giving.
The event course cuts across the heart of the World Heritage Tongariro National Park, starting off at the Desert Road on the Eastern side of the Park and takes in the Rangipo Desert and Waihohonu traverse track before finishing at the Chateau Tongariro in Whakapapa to the West. The 26km run/walk course begins approximately 6kms up the Tukino Road in the Rangipo Desert (entrance off the Desert Road, SH1) with a long hard climb straight up initially. From there it's a mixture of rock hopping, lava fields, desert, alpine track (the views are amazing), and beech forest before finishing beside the Chateau Tongariro. The 13km and 6.5km options will both start and loop back to the event finish line here.

When I first won Ironman New Zealand in 2001 I finished in a time of 8:24:25hr 19yrs later I finish 6th in 8:14:36 as a 47yr old! At least I'm going faster and faster!
I know I can go so much better after such a limited build up in my running preparation so I'm looking forward to when we can race again, and full of motivation to race to my potential and keep pushing the boundaries as a nearly 48yr old!!
